A Modern Link To The Past

Halls Crossing Marina is 3.1 miles south of Bullfrog Marina via the John Atlantic Burr Ferry which is owned by the Utah Department of Transportation and operated by the park’s concessioner, ARAMARK.

Halls Crossing was named after the Mormon pioneer, Charles Hall, who, along with his two sons and a few other men, built a ferry wide enough to carry two wagons at a time across the Colorado River for the Hole-in-the-Rock Expedition.

To fully appreciate the enormity of this accomplishment you have to understand that this occurred in 1880 on the bank of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below the rim of a seemingly impassable rock cliff.

There were no suitable trees in the area, so lumber had to be brought to the rim of the canyon by horse-drawn wagons from the town of Escalante, Utah, 51 miles distant. It was then lowered to the men working below.

Hall and his two sons operated the ferry at Hole-in-the-Rock until 1881 when they found an easier crossing about 35 miles upstream.

The Halls operated the ferry at this new location until 1884 when it was either intentionally cut loose by cattlemen in an effort to prevent its use by rustlers or through an act of God.

The Halls never replaced the ferry and left the area soon after.

Hall's Crossing Marina now occupies this site.

The National Park Service provides a:

Comments and Suggestions

I started this website in February 2011, and, quite honestly, it has not lived up to my hopes and expectations.

I would appreciate some honest appraisals and suggestions as to how to improve it.
